  • Minimum wage from 01 October 2011

    The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has announced the national minimum wage rates from 1 October 2011:

    • the adult rate will increase by 15p to £6.08 an hour
    • the rate for 18-20 year olds will increase by 6p to £4.98 an hour
    • the rate for 16-17 year olds will increase by 4p to £3.68 an hour
    • the rate for apprentices will increase by 10p to £2.60 an

    • Poor record keeping will cost £50,000

      HMRC inspectors will visit to check business record.

      Following a consultation exercise, HMRC has started a test and learn project to pilot business records checks for SME businesses across the country. Apparently, eight HMRC offices are taking part with up to 1,200 businesses being approached about a meeting at their premises to check their current year records.     • Tax man targets restaurants

      22-07-2011

      HMRC is setting up ten new ‘task forces’ to focus on restaurants in London, then in Scotland and the North West. The other teams will target evasion ‘in specific high risk trade sectors and locations across the UK’ as part of HMRC effort to raise an additional £7bn in revenue each year by 2014/15. Further teams are to be launched in 2012/13, so it seems that these will be ongoing projects.
